Meeting held Thursday 1st September 2011
Suggested theme: Globe
The group held their meeting on the 1 September. Apologies were received from lain whose broken ankle is taking a long time to heal. But hopefully he will be back soon.
The optional subject was ‘Globe’ and it was amazing how many poems, stories etc. came from that one word. Roy started the meeting with his poem Eclipse, based on the total eclipse of the sun on the 11 August 1999. The description brought back all the memories to us. Elizabeth's poem was very topical, she wrote, sadly, about the demise of the 'ordinary light bulb' (remember – the ones that light up immediately?) We sympathise, replacements are very hard to find!
Robert's poem ‘Globe',asked where lies the limit of our Earth's generosity to supply the human race with their 'daily bread, their shelter, heat and water?' Food for thought there!
Charles delighted us with The name's Lobe. G...Lobe - a brilliant take on James Bond.
A Long Time Ago was Sue's poem detailing the gradual destruction of the globe (our Earth) and what is likely to happen to life on it if we aren't careful.
Mike entertained us with the first part of a story he is writing entitled The World as I Know It, it’s all there, a sinking ship, Officers (sorry occifers!) who don't have a clue etc. Mike, we're looking forward to part two especially when you land on the island you mentioned!
Be Our Guest was Stephanie's story, combining good memories, lots of laughter and a little sadness as she told us about The Cavaliers 2004 Disney Carnival Float. They congregated in the Globe Hotel prior to coming out to astound the inhabitants of Torrington, their friends and visitors with their entertainment. The Globe Hotel had played a major part in the run up to the carnival. Dress rehearsals, singing practice, partiesetc. Now it is with sadness she remembers all that went on there as she passes the now abandoned and dilapidated Globe Hotel.
Jean's poem, Lateral Thinking, was about Spiders…but Jean the subject was Globe! Okay, the body of the spider is sort of a globe shape and maybe your thinking has gone ectopic - as in an abnormal place! We all enjoyed the poem and we'll watch out for the Scorpion!
It was a good meeting. Anyone who wants to come along will be made very welcome.
Next meeting 6 October a The Plough. Subject: Cube.Sue Davan
